    Description

    Ridgways (England)
    BUCKINGHAM
    9" Rectangular Serving Bowl
    1887, Aesthetic Movement
This listing is for a nicely shaped rectangular serving or vegetable bowl from Ridgway (England). The pattern is called "Buckingham," and shows colored leaves and flowers on an Aesthetic Movement shape, with curved rim, ribbed corners, and gold trim. The bowl measures 9 inches long across the rim, 7 inches across the center, and 2 inches high at the rim.
The bowl is in good condition, with no chips or cracks. There is fine overall crazing that is more visible on the exterior and bottom. The crazing has begun to brown or darken, although still faint on the inside of the bowl (not very visible in some of the photos; see the closeup photos for a better example of the crazing). The gold trim is heavily worn, almost gone on the end edges. There is also a bump on one end-side, which is underglaze and original.
The flat bottom of the bowl (no foot ring) has several marks. The most readable is a bow and arrow logo for "Ridgways | Royal Semi Porcelain | Rd. No. 72235 | Buckingham." There is also a red hand-written mark (looks like P Y 1425) and several numbers (likely decorator marks), and a couple of embossed marks that look like letters or numbers (including one I can make out that is an 87). The registration number 72235 indicates manufacture in 1887.
