Description
William Ridgway ca. 1830-1834 "Oriental" Red WR Dinner PlateScalloped Edge 9-3/16" Width. The plate has a printed Maker's Mark of an Urn and Beehive Pattern; "ORIENTAL" is the pattern name, while "WR" is an abbreviation for William Ridgway. The WR without '& Co' indicates a date of 1830-34 as deescribed as follows:
The brothers John Ridgway and William Ridgway were in partnership at the Cauldon Works from 1814 to 1830. In 1830 the two brothers inherited the Bell Works from their uncle George; John kept the Cauldon Works and William moved to the Bell works. The Church Works were owned by Joseph Mayer who, in about 1832, rented part of the works to William Ridgway. William Ridgway was Joseph Mayer's cousin. Joseph Mayer had in his employ a 'clever modeller', Leonard James Abington, who was also a chemist, and around 1834 he placed him in partnership, thus making the '& Co' in William Ridgway & Co. Thus this plate was made circa 1830-1834.
The "Oriental" Pattern by Ridgway is interesting in that is is not of an Eastern Asian influence, as most people consider "Oriental" today, but more Middle Eastern with the domed temples and the period headdress on the people.
The condition of this plate is excellent and appears even better than it's age would normally dictate. However, there is crazing throughout, and the plate has been smoke stained, especially noticeable on the rear. There is one small 1/8" chip on the rear and a second smaller chip near the rim on the backside. Finally there is an old crack that extends three inches from the rim toward the center of the plate which can be noticed on both sides of the plate; it does appear as if this crack was expertly repaired a long time ago. This crack is shown in the last four photos of the listing.
Thank you for looking. I hope you will enjoy this beautiful antique plate for a very long time!
