    Description

This item was produced between 1890-1920's by Ridgways England.  This piece is one of a series called "Coaching Days & Coaching Ways". They created the series on amber brown pottery with black transfer illustration scenes from the book of COACHING DAYS AND COACHING WAYS, by W. Outram Tristram. The book was published by Macmillan & Co. which is why every item pertaining to this series is marked on the back includes "By Special Permission" along with the publisher, book title, and maker.
Hugh Thomson and Herbert Railton did the scene illustrations for the book.  The scene transfers were that of old English stagecoach roads, stopping at inns and villages along the way.
This bread plate has a silver luster band on its rim which was one of their design variations.  The band was applied during the firing process.
It is in excellent condition for its antiquity, no chips or cracks.  There is the typical crazing, however it does not stand out.  In addition to the Special Permission backstamp, there is an incised triangular number of 200 (2 over 00).  The scene on this piece "Henry the Eighth and the Abbot of Realina".  I cannot make out the rest of the inscription in quotations.  The bread plate measures just under 7" in diameter and is slightly fluted.
