History of William Ridgway & Company
Ridgways China began in 1838 when William Ridgway formed a partnership with his son Edward John Ridgway and Leonard Abington. They relocated to the newly built Bedford Works in 1866. From 1879 to 1920, they traded as Ridgways, In 1920 the pottery was renamed to Ridgways (Bedford Works). The Ridgway family controlled the company until 1929 when the Cauldon Potteries took it over. They continued to use the Ridgway name and obtained Limited Company status in 1955. In 1964 they became part of the Allied English Potteries and subsequently part of the Royal Doulton Group.
